The GHSA state volleyball playoffs were unkind – an understatement – to Houston County’s local teams in 2019.
Saturday was a day that saw not one, not two, but all five fall out of contention.
In Class AAAA, Perry, despite being the host and the No. 2 seed out of Region 2, couldn’t hold off Druid Hills. It could only be described as a valiant effort, it should be noted, but the results were still 3-0 – in a best of five. The Lady Panthers, finishing 14-13 if MaxPreps is accurate, were edged in the first game 26-24. They lost the second to the Lady Red Devils, moving on at 18-12, 25-16, and then were edged again in the third game, 25-22.
In AAAAA, Warner Robins, the No. 3 seed out of Region 1-AAAAA, had no answer from Starr’s Mill, the No. 2 out of Region 3. The Demonettes fell 3-0, with scores of 25-7, 25-3, 25-4, respectively. They finished 13-20 while Starr’s Mill moved on at 31-12.
Veterans came the closest of all. The No. 1 seed out of Region 1-AAAAA, hosted Fayette County – a team it had beaten 2-0 back in August – and came up short 3-2. The Lady Warhawks won the first game 25-22, but lost the second by the same score. The third went to Veterans, 25-22 as well, and the fourth went to the Lady Tigers by the same margin.
That set up a fifth and deciding game, which was won by the visitor 17-15.
Veterans finished its year 33-13 – also carrying a number of memories into the offseason, such as once again winning the county championship. Fayette County continued on at 23-18.
Finally, in AAAAAA, Northside fell to Lakeside, Evans 3-0, while Houston County was shut out by Greenbrier 3-0 (25-14, 25-13, 25-12).
