Coy leads Houston to Victory Over Lady Eagles

The region 2-AAAAA tournament got under way this morning with two local teams competing in the opener at 11 AM. The host team, the Lady Bears of Houston County, claimed an early lead and never looked back asApplebees-ad they moved past the Lady Eagles of Northside by a final score of 10-1 in the five inning, run shortened contest.  HOCO advances to play at 5 PM when they will face the winner of the Greenbrier/Jones County Game (1PM).  Northside will play at 3 PM today when the will face the loser of the 1 PM game between Greenbrier and Jones County.

Scoring started early for the Lady Bears as Amber Coy doubled with two outs in the 1st inning. After a single by Hannah Otto, Sarah Smith added another Bear double,  scoring both runners and giving the Lady Bears a 2 – 0 lead.  The black and silver continued the scoring in the inning as Emily Simmons singled in Smith making the lead 3-0 after the 1st inning.  The home team would maintain the lead powered by great pitching from Sarah Smith who pitched all five innings  of  the game, striking out  four and giving up six hits.

Northside got hits from Taylor Sheffield, Jaliyah Lynch, Cassidy Ruffin , Ashley Bennette, HaleyCrofutt, and Sam Cannon, with Crofutt’s double the only extra base hit for the Lady Eagles. Cassidy Ruffin had the lone RBI.

Houston County got another great performance from Amber Coy who was 3-4 for the day including three doubles and two RBI’s.  Maddi Slappey (2-3), Caitlyn Davis (2-2), and Emily Simmons (2-3) also performed well at the plate for Houston.
