Houston County comes up short for region title; Perry to enter state as No. 4

Houston County came ever-so-close to winning its first Region 1-AAAAAA championship under first-year Head Coach Lee Kicklighter. The Lady Bears lost both of their regular season games to Lee County, but in the region tournament that began Wednesday, they got an 8-0 win. That was thanks in part to Rylee Lamb working six innings of four-hit ball.

That was also in answer to the Lady Trojans’ 9-6 win earlier in the day, and that in turn set up a third and deciding game Thursday. Lee County won it 3-0.

Northside on the other hand had to face off against Coffee. It fell to it 3-0, 13-1. Play continues to set the bracket for state.

Elsewhere, Perry will start the Class AAAA state fast-pitch softball tournament as the No. 4 seed out of Region 1.

That was settled Thursday via a 7-5 walk-off win by Howard. That in turn gave the Lady Huskies the edge – and the No. 3 seed – in the best two-out-of-three between the two.

Howard beat Perry 10-0 in the first game of the series Wednesday. The Lady Panthers answered that with a 10-7 win.

Perry entered the Region 2-AAAA tournament Monday facing off against West Laurens. That was on Monday – they were on the road for both series. The Lady Raiders beat it 15-1, 8-0.

Howard on the other hand, took on Mary Persons. The Lady Bulldogs beat it 15-0, 10-0. That set up a showdown between Mary Persons and West Laurens. The Lady Raiders won the first 9-1. The Lady Bulldogs won the second 6-5. That set up a third in which West Laurens won 5-4, also in walk-off fashion.

Perry will travel to the home of the No. 1 seed out of Region 3 when the state tournament begins Oct. 9. That looks to be Burke County or Thomson at this point.
