The big winner Thursday in volleyball? Irma.
The hurricane – thanks to the threat of traffic conditions – managed to take out two contests: Perry (and Strong Rock) at Luella and Houston County at West Laurens.
“Disappointed we didn’t get to go,” said Lady Panthers Head Coach Terri Hunt, “but didn’t want to be stuck in traffic on a bus, either.”
Traffic “nightmare” is how Lady Bears Head Coach Maria Huelsman described it.
Those that did get to play were Veterans and Warner Robins. The Lady Warhawks were at Whitewater where they took on it and East Coweta. Results for the first were unknown, but they beat East Coweat 2-1. They lost the first 25-14, won the second 25-22 and third, 25-21.
The Demonettes on the other hand, hosted Northside and beat the Lady Eagles 3-0. They won the first 25-8, second, 25-18 and third, 25-16.
“You can see the girls were focused and ready to win the first set,” said Head Coach Cassie Bennett. “And then they got a little unfocused in the next two. However, there is no rule that says a win has to be pretty.”
Shakira Daniel, she said, “came alive last night and made some momentum shifting plays when we needed them. I am definitely excited to see what else she has to offer our team this season.”
Daniel ended up with an ace, two kills and four blocks.
Anna Slaughter also had two aces and four kills and Parker Hogan three aces and two kills.
Hannah Spalding had five aces and Kayla Luke an ace and six kills.
Finally, Hannah Luke and Shania Kelly each had two kills and Kayla Moore one.
