Northside High School graduate John Wharton, Jr. finished his Northside High varsity tennis career undefeated.  Wharton, who graduated May 27 with the Class of 2017, accomplished this while playing at the number one position.

He not only won all his matches for four years, he also never lost a set.  In addition, he took the initiative to fundraise for his team and raised more than $4,000 the past few years.  The funds were used to purchase team uniforms, warm-up suits, t-shirts, hoodies and end-of-year banquets and awards.
Northside High Principal Dr. Greg Peavy commented, “John has exemplified what we expect from our students at Northside. He has worked hard and excelled in the classroom, but has gotten involved outside of the classroom as well. His performance on the tennis court is exceptional and is only matched by his willingness to help others around him.”
A scholar athlete, Wharton received Mercer University’s Josiah Penfield Academic Scholarship as well as the 2017 Nece Hopson Memorial Scholarship.  He will attend Mercer this fall and plans to major in bio-chemistry.
