Houston County saw its season come to an end Wednesday. The Bears were swept by Pope two games to none in the second round of the GHSA Class AAAAAA state tournament.
Ryan Webb limited Houston County to just three hits in Game 1 – the host netting 11 and the game itself only lasting five innings and ending 10-0. Webb struck out six and didn’t walk a hitter. Two of the Bears’ hits went to Austin Langford in three at bats. Cam Jones had the other.
Chandler Ring took the loss. He went four innings and gave up six hits and five runs. He struck out two and walked four.
Houston County fell in the second game 11-2. It ended its season 17-16 overall. It was already behind 6-0 – four runs in the third and two in the fourth – when it pushed one across in the fifth and one in the sixth. Pope put down any thoughts of a rally with a five-run seventh. It out-hit the Bears 14-3. Chase Smith and Reid Robertson worked the hill, with the first earning the win. He went five and two-thirds innings and gave up the hits while fanning seven and walking three. Robertson went an inning and a third, struck out three and walked one.
Jones and Chandler Dawson took the damage on the hill. The first went two and a third while giving up four hits and four runs. He also struck out four and walked three. The second went four innings while surrendering eight hits and seven runs. He struck out one and walked four.
Lawson Trawick led the offense, going 2-3.
