Veterans High School’s girls and boys each won Region 1-AAAAA championships Thursday on the course bordering Huntington Middle School.
The Lady Warhawks finished with 31 points. Bainbridge had 57 and was followed by Thomas County Central with 81. Harris County was fourth – with the top four teams earning a berth at state – with 88 and host Warner Robins fifth with 103.
MacKenzie Walls earned individual honors literally running away from teammate Brynn Wilson and the rest of the field. Walls crossed the finish line in 19:12.50 while Wilson came in at 20:53.15.
Alaysha Hawkins was sixth for Veterans with a time of 22:10.81. The Demonettes top finisher was Markia Claiborne. She was 13th with a time of 23:20.71.
For the boys, the Warhawks had 20 points. Warner Robins was second with 56, followed by Thomas County Central with 77, Bainbridge with 91 and Harris County with 133.
The top nine finishers were split between the Warhawks and Demons. Robbie Griffin for Veterans was first with a time of 17:18.88. Teammate Aamiri Ducksworth was second at 17:30.12. Franco Sosa for Warner Robins was third with a time of 17:44.72, and then it was back to the Warhawks.
Brett Horton was fourth with a time of 17:53.91, and then it was back to the Demons – you see how this goes – and Alex Trotter. He was fifth with a time of 18:02.06.
The next three were Veterans runners, Griffin Hodges, Andrew Bos and Rio Espinoza, with 18:08.53, 18:16.78 and 18:19.47, respectively.
Warner Robins’ Teraence Calhoun was nine with a time of 18:23.91 and then it was Bainbridge’s Efrain Diaz and the rest of the field.
