Veterans High’s wrestling team started off well enough at the GHSA Team Dual Wrestling Championships held Thursday-Saturday in Macon.

The Warhawks, Region 1-AAAAA representatives along with Harris County, opened with a 48-28 win over Starr’s Mill.

Events took a turn for the worse from there. Buford was their next draw. The Wolves had opened with an 84-0 win over Arabia Mountain. That was a sign of things to come, as they beat Veterans 41-23. They then went on to beat Union Grove and Woodland, Cartersville for the state championship.

The Warhawks did earn another win. After dropping down into the consolation bracket – still with a chance to battle for third or fourth – they beat the aforementioned Tigers 55-24. That was on Friday and put them against Cass on Saturday. Cass had been knocked into the consolation round by Union Grove. It eliminated Veterans, 36-28, and then went on to face off against, and fall, to Union Grove again.

Perry, at AAAA, fell hard in its Thursday opener. That was a 67-4 loss to Troup. The Panthers then beat Burke County 54-21 – also on Thursday – before facing off against fellow Region 2-AAAA representative West Laurens. The Raiders eliminated Perry 46-27.

In the end, Jefferson beat Gilmer in the championship bracket for the title, while Luella beat Troup in the consolation bracket for third.

There were no local squads represented at the Class AAAAAA level. Valdosta and Lee County were the 1-AAAAAA representatives. The Trojans won their first match, lost their second and were eliminated in the first round of the Consolation bracket. The Wildcats won their first but lost their second to eventual state champ Alexander. (South Paulding was second.)

Valdosta then won two bouts – Creekview and Allatoona – before falling to Richmond Hill for third/fourth.
