Warhawks advance at state; Demonettes pull off upset

UPDATE: News was mixed for Perry’s girls and boys in the opening round of the Class AAAA state tournament. While the girls saw their season come to an end via a 3-0 loss to Northside, Columbus, the Panthers won. They blanked Hardaway 2-0 to advance. They will next play at Druid Hills – it is a No. 1, Perry is a second seed. Druid Hills shut out Hephzibah 10-0 to gets its second round matchup. That game is set for May 2, time to be determined.


Veterans High’s boys joined the girls in moving on to the next round of the GHSA Class AAAAA state tournament. The Warhawks shut out Wayne County 2-0 – their 10th blanking of an opponent this year.

The group will take on McIntosh in the second round. That game is slated for May 2, time to be determined. The Chiefs advanced via a 4-0 win over Dutchtown. They will enter the contest 20-5, while Veterans comes in at 16-3.

Such was not the good news for a few others.

South Effingham also posted a shutout. It was over Warner Robins’ boys, 5-0, thus pushing it out of the playoffs. Richmond Hill had it a little rougher go at it, but still eliminated Houston County with a 5-2 win. Glynn Academy also couldn’t keep Northside’s boys off the scoreboard, but a 5-1 decision ended the Eagles’ postseason run.

On the girls’ side, the Demonettes pulled off an upset – at least by the rankings/bracket draw. They, the No. 3 seed out of Region 1, beat the No. 2 out of Region 2, South Effingham 3-0 – all three goals coming in the second half. They will next take on No. 1 seed Union Grove, with a contest date set for May 1.

Finally, Northside’s girls took a hard season-ending loss to Glynn Academy, 9-0.
