Warner Robins Head Coach Mike Chastain indicated there was no quit in Veterans. “Thing are a little down for them right now,” he said, referring to a rash of injuries coupled with their youth. “But they’re going to be ready to play … they’re going to get after it and play hard.”
Proof of that came in the second quarter. Despite being down 42-0 – they eventually lost 56-17 – and even with the Demons pretty much having their way up and down the field, the Warhawks simply wouldn’t give up. In fact, it was then they appeared to fight their hardest. A 65-yard drive and a 12-yard touchdown pass to Sebastian Verger was the result – James Tinney adding the extra point.
Then, to solidify that mettle, they caught the Demons off guard with an onsides kick. That led to a field goal by Tinney of 26 yards to make it 42-10.
Now that obviously isn’t to say Warner Robins was about to stand by and let all of its good work prior go to waste, it continued to score … and score … leading 49-10 at the half and the final score heading into the fourth – its only punt coming during that time as well – which was played under a running clock.
All told, the Demons got two touchdowns from Jarius Burnette. Two came by way of Jaydon Norman. Jaeven West scored twice and Julius Cobbs and Marcayll Jones scored once. Eli Mashburn was perfect on all accounts with points after.
Burnette’s first score was from one yard out and gave Warner Robins a 7-0 lead. Norman, with a four-yard pass from quarterback Dylan Fromm made it 14-0.
West, on a 99-yard run, made it 21-0 and Cobbs caught a pass of five yards to make it 28-0. That’s where it was after one.
Norman, with a touchdown pass of 24 yards, made it 35-0 and then Burnette, after Warner Robins had recovered a fumble on Veterans’ 9, ran it in from there on the first play from scrimmage.
After the Warhawks had put up their two scores, West – the Demons having nearly 400 yards of offense in the firs half – scored from the 13.
Jones scored on a pass from the 11 with about eight minutes left to play in the third and Veterans netted its final score following – a seven-yard pass to Cordelle Clark.
Warner Robins remained undefeated in 1-AAAAA, and overall, with the win. It is now 3-0, 9-0. The Warhawks on the other hand fell to 0-4, 2-8.
