Bears get two critical runs late to hold off Marist; Trojans walk-off to down Eagles

One word to describe the Bears victory over Marist this afternoon…. gritty. HoCo was up & down throughout the game but they showed up when it counted most & got the win by a score of 10-8 to sweep the regular season series against the War Eagles.

HoCo got the scoring started with a Kai Decker sac rbi to give the Bears a 1-0 lead after one. The Bears had a big 5-run bottom of the second that was mostly due to walks & led 6-0 going into the top half of the third.

Marist quickly got back into the game by picking up four runs in the top of the third to trim the Bears’ lead to 6-4 & later in the top half of the fifth, they picked up another run to cut the lead down to one.

HoCo’s offense found some much needed life in the bottom of the fifth by picking up two runs thanks to a Drew Burress 2 rbi double to lead 8-5.

The War Eagles however never gave up & were able to score three runs in the top half of the sixth to tie the game at 8 a piece. In the bottom of the sixth with 2 outs & runners at 2nd & 3rd base; junior Eli Stephens came to bat & hit a huge go-ahead two rbi double to give the Bears the lead 10-8. Junior Brooks Willis saved the game by surrendering no runs while on the mound & HoCo picked up the dub 10-8.

Carson Small was the starting pitcher this afternoon & started strong but gave up four runs in the top of the third. The Bears improved to 3-0 overall while the War Eagles fell to 0-4 overall.

Elsewhere; Northside traveled to play at Peach Co that resulted in a Trojans walk-off victory in the bottom of the seventh 6-5. Peach Co improved to 3-0 overall while the Eagles unofficially fell to 1-1 overall as two previous scores remain missing at this time.
