Bears start off strong in Hoover, Alabama by picking up a pair of wins

The Houston County Bears made the trip north of Birmingham to Hoover, Alabama to play in the Perfect Game Showdown Tournament & picked up a win earlier this afternoon & a second win just under an hour ago. HoCo’s first game was against the Helena, AL Huskies which started off with HoCo scoring a run in the top of the 1st & the game went to the second inning with the Bears leading 1-0.

Helena had an explosive bottom half of the second by running in four runs to lead 4-1 going into inning three where HoCo responded with a run of their own to trail 4-2. The Huskies increased their lead back to three by scoring a run in the bottom half of the fourth & eventually the game went to the sixth with Helena leading 5-2.

This is where HoCo turned the game on it’s head completely by scoring four runs in the top half of the sixth to retake the lead 6-5 & would keep the Huskies scoreless in the bottom half of the sixth. The Bears got a ton of insurance with another explosive inning by adding four more runs in the top half of the seventh to lead 10-5 going into the final half inning.

Helena scored a run in the bottom half of the seventh & that is all they would get as HoCo finished the game strong & won 10-6 to advance in the winner’s bracket & improve to 7-0 overall on the season. The Bears had 15 hits & committed one error while the Huskies had nine hits & committed three errors.

The Bears took a quick breather & prepared to take on the North Broward Prep Eagles from Coconut Creek, Florida who was ranked #33 in the nation in preseason rankings… HoCo was ranked #23 nationally in the preseason rankings. This game started with a scoreless first inning & in the top half of the second… North Broward scored two runs to lead 3-0 going into the bottom half of the second.

The Bears had an explosive bottom half of the second by scoring five runs to lead 5-3 heading into the third. HoCo added a run in the bottom half of the third to lead 6-3 which would be the difference in this match-up. The Eagles closed in by adding a run in the top of the fourth & adding two more in the top of the fifth to tie the game at 6.

HoCo retook the lead in the bottom half of the sixth to lead 7-6 & kept North Broward at bay the remainder of the game to win 7-5 to improve to 8-0 overall on the season. The Bears had 12 hits & committed one error & the Eagles had six hits & committed one error.

HoCo will take on the Central Phenix City, AL Red Devils tomorrow morning at 10:30am central
