An answer to an answer.
That might pretty much sum up the first and second quarter between Veterans and Buford in their GHSA Class AAAAA matchup Tuesday at Buford.
The Lady Wolves won 59-44. They got off to an 8-0 start – all of those courtesy of Tate Walters. The Lady Warhawks “answered” with 14 straight: Tamia Luckey with the first five (a two- and a three-pointer), Raven Glover with a pair of free throws, Madison Perez with five (also a two and a three) and Stacie Jones with a layup.
Jones’ layup came with 1:29 left in the quarter. Despite both teams’ best efforts, neither could score from there to the buzzer. That made it 14-8.
Then came the aforementioned “answer to the answer”. Buford went on a 19-2 tear – credit misses by the Lady Warhawks and pressure; mostly the latter. The bleeding didn’t stop until Zykeria Jenkins hit a layup and was fouled with 22 seconds left in the quarter. She missed the free throw and Buford missed on their next possession, which led to the halftime buzzer.
Veterans was outscored 20-4 in the process and trailed 28-18.
To the Lady Warhawks’ credit, they never surrendered. A few times before it was over they got it to single digits, but in the end just couldn’t gave any ground.
Buford edged them 11-9 in the third and 20-17 down the stretch for the win.
Jones finished with 11 points to lead Veterans. Luckey had 10, Perez and Ansley Miranda eight each.
The Lady Warhawks finished their year 26-5 while the Lady Wolves improved to 27-2 and move on to the Final Four with a chance to win their third-straight state title – fourth out of the last five years.
