Harris County drops Veterans

With eight Region 1-AAAAA games left, it’s hardly panic time for Veterans. Still, the Warhawks, traditionally sitting well on the plus side of the wins-losses this time in the season, would no doubt like a better showing to date.

The boys fell to Harris County 5-1 Tuesday. That marked six losses out of their last seven games and left them at 3-8, 1-3. The Tigers, appearing to be the team to beat in the region at this point, improved to 8-3, 3-0.

The Warhawks did have seven hits – Harris County had 11 – but only managed to Carter King (1-3) home. He doubled to start the bottom of the sixth, was moved to third on Blake Ethridge’s ground ball (1-3) and scored on A.J. Simpson’s single (2-3).

Harris County had already put their runs on the board by then. It scored two in the first, two in the fourth and one in the top of the sixth.

Ethridge and Evan Bussell split time on the mound for Veterans. Ethridge worked three and two-thirds and Bussell three and a third. The first gave up eight hits, four runs, struck out two and walked four. The second yielded three hits, a run, struck out three and walked one.

The win went to Tanner Cotton. He threw six innings, gave up the hits and run while striking out eight and not walking a hitter.

Northside was also in action Tuesday. It might have been a momentum-builder for its game against Warner Robins today at home. However, being on the wrong side of a 17-4 scoreboard probably didn’t help.
