HoCo, Perry girls roll in state openers; others fall

Crushed it. Actually, crushed “them”. That was the case for both Houston County High’s and Perry High’s girls in their opening round of the GHSA Class AAAAAA, AAAA, respectively, state soccer tournament.

The Lady Bears, leading 3-0 at the half, rolled past Westlake 10-0. It marked shutout No. 14 and the ninth time the girls had won by that margin. They improved to 14-0-2 in the process. Westlake, in an apparent Covid-shortened season, finished 1-4-0.

The Lady Panthers did likewise, dominating Westover 10-0. It was their 15th shutout and marked the fifth time this year they have won by that margin. Westover – see: apparent Covid-shortened – finished 0-3-0.

Both moved on to the Sweet 16.

The Region 1-AAAAAA champs will host the winner between Heritage, Conyers (11-4-0), the No. 2 seed out of Region 3, and Bradwell Institute (11-4-1), the No. 3 seed out of Region 2.

That game, according to the GHSA bracket, will be April 28.

Perry will play LaGrange (10-4-0), the No. 2 seed out of Region 2. It got a bye in the first round. That game is also scheduled for April 28, according to the GHSA bracket.
