It took an extra day, but Houston County got what it was after: A GHSA Class AAAAAA series win over Glynn Academy.
The Lady Bears easily won the Game 1 opener between the two Thursday, 11-0. That was thanks in part to the two-hit pitching of Ally Fleming. She worked all five innings, struck out one and walked two.
Alice Thomas was also 2-3 in the effort, with three runs scored. Bobbi Poff was 1-3, but her hit was a double that brought in three. She also scored once.
Kendall Huelsman was 2-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.
The Lady Terrors from Brunswick, switching from visitor to home, won the nightcap 3-2 on a walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh.
That set up Game 3 on Friday, which was won by Houston County 9-4. It got three in the first thanks to a leadoff single by Thomas, a double by Poff and singles by Averi Martin, Huelsman and Makayla Krepps.
It added three more in the second when Thomas doubled with an out, Poff and Martin singled again and Huelsman doubled. Krepps’ fielder’s choice brought in Martin to make it 6-0.
The Lady Bears added two more in the fourth to make it 8-0 before Glynn Academy scored its four in the top of the fifth.
Houston County’s final run came in the sixth. It out-hit the visitor 13-9.
Thomas finished 2-4 with two runs scored. Poff was 2-3 with an RBI and three scored. Martin was 3-4 with four runs scored and Huelsman 3-3 with three driven in. Krepps went 1-2 but drove home four.
Fleming earned her second win of the series with a complete-game finish. She struck out five and didn’t walk a hitter.
The Lady Bears will next face off against Creekview. It swept Carrollton in two games, 4-3 and 3-0. Both are No. 1 seeds, but “home” on the bracket falls in Houston County’s favor.
