A couple of 9-0 runs helped Johns Creek pull away from Houston County Wednesday in the second round of the GHSA Class AAAAAA state tournament. Try as they did, the Lady Bears – the road team – were unable to close the distance by the time the horn sounded.
Consequently, they lost 65-55, finishing their season 18-10. The Lady Gladiators move on at 19-11.
The two runs came in the second quarter. The first quarter, sparked by a 6-0 start by Houston County – 3-pointers by Isley Harris and Jordyn Johnson to start – ended 11-9 in favor of the host. Credit Samantha Breslow and her two 3-pointers for sparking that turnaround for Johns Creek.
Johns Creek then got out to a 25-16 lead after the first run and then led 34-18 at the half following the second.
The Lady Bears did fight back with a 10-2 run of their own to start the third but the Lady Gladiators still wouldn’t give. It was 51-38 heading into the final frame. Houston County got that down to nine, 62-53, with just inside three minutes left, but Johns Creek got enough – scored 14 to the Lady Bears’ 17 during the period – for the win.
