Perry didn’t gain much Friday night but it did gain – or at least “keep” – that alive. That actually didn’t come from its game – a 40-3 loss at Mary Persons. It came from the fact Upson-Lee rallied with 21 points in the fourth quarter to beat West Laurens 34-24. That left the Panthers and Raiders 1-3 in Region 2-AAAA, 5-4 overall. They both have one game left: Against each other, next Friday in Perry. The winner will at least get the No. 4 seed in the playoffs.
As far as its game against Mary Persons, the latter jumped out to a 7-0 lead on its first possession. That was via Quen Wilson’s 70-yard run. (Perry did move the ball on its first possession, but eventually turned it over on downs.)
The Panthers punted on their second possession and the Bulldogs scored again. This time it was via a five-play drive and a two-yard pass from J. T. Hartadge to Andre Jackson. Jake Causey again made the point after.
Perry punted. Mary Persons turned it over on downs and the Panthers were intercepted. The game was into the second quarter by then. Mary Persons missed a field goal and were also slowed by an interception.
Both punted to start the third and from there, Mary Persons began to pull away. Enrico Harden’s 13-yard touchdown run with the PAT made it 21-0. Following a Panthers interception, Hartadge found A. Davis with a 44-yard touchdown pass. The point after was no good, but it was 27-0 at the point – still in the third.
Mary Persons added two more scores in the fourth whereas Perry was only able to get a field goal.
