That was too close for comfort. Perry jumped out to a 6-0 lead over Mary Persons on the road Tuesday and then had to hang on for a 6-5 win.
The Lady Panthers scored two in the first, three in the second and one in the third. The Lady Bulldogs scored two in the third, one in the fourth and two in the fifth. They also put the leadoff runner on in the sixth and had two on in the seventh when the last out was recorded. (A double play erased a double in the fifth.)
Perry had a walk in the fourth and a walk in the fifth but was unable to do anymore damage once Mallory Turner settled in. She had eight walks total, four in the first inning alone, while also striking out six and giving up five hits.
Madison Homen went the distance for Perry to earn the win. She gave up seven hits, walked one and struck out three.
Terra Odom helped lead the offense. She was just 1-2, but that’s because she also walked twice. She also had an RBI and scored twice. AliRae Dykes also had a run driven in and a run scored while going 1-3 with a walk.
Close or not, the main thing was it was another victory, and as such made the Lady Panthers 5-0 in Region 2-AAAA. (West Laurens is second at 3-1.) They are also 12-4 overall. Mary Persons on the other hand, fell to 1-4, 7-11.
Elsewhere, Northside fell at Coffee 8-5 in a Region 1-AAAAAA matchup. That left the Lady Eagles at 2-3 in the division, 5-10 overall. The Lady Trojans improved to 2-1 – same as Lee County, with Houston County at 3-0 – 9-9 overall.
Also, Harris County beat Warner Robins 10-2 at home in a 1-AAAAA encounter.
The Lady Tigers improved to 3-1 in the region – Veterans leads everybody with a 3-0 (9-7) record) – 8-5 overall. The Demonettes fell to 0-5, 1-14.
And speaking of the Lady Warhawks, a day after falling to the Lady Bears 4-2 at home, they edged out Wayne County on the road 2-0.
