Perry-West Laurens (Oct. 2)
Perry beat West Laurens, its second opponent in the Region 2-AAAA tournament, 5-4 in the opener, but fell 10-4 in the nightcap.
That set up a deciding Game 3 scenario for Thursday, Oct. 3, at the home of the Lady Panthers. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
Perry-Spalding (Sept. 30)
Perry had to battle its way to a Game No. 1 win, but Game No. 2: No problem in the Lady Panthers’ Region 2-AAAA tournament opener Monday at home.
Perry won the first game against Spalding 5-4. That actually came via a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh by AliRae Dykes. She brought in Raegan Stella, who had doubled with one out.
The Lady Jaguars had tied it with a run in the top of the inning. They scored two in the first and one in the second. Perry scored one in the first. That came on a single by Abby Ussery, which brought in Dykes, who had doubled with two outs. The Lady Panthers went out front with two in the fourth. That began when Terra Odom reached on an error with an out in the books. Dykes walked and Ussery walked. Harley Crumley then singled to bring in Odom and Dykes. Ussery in turn scored on a wild pitch.
Perry out-hit Spalding 10-7.
Dykes finished 2-3 with a walk. She drove in the one and scored the two. Ussery was 2-2 with a walk. She collected the RBI and scored the one. Crumley was 1-3 with her two runs batted in.
Madison Homen worked all seven innings for the host. She struck out four and walked two.
Perry rode an eight-run fourth to victory in the nightcap, winning 13-0 in four innings.
One of the Lady Panthers’ runs came in the first and two each in the second. They had 14 hits to the Lady Jags’ two. The two were the result of Hughes’ gem on the mound. She didn’t strike out a batter, but only walked one.
Dykes again helped lead the offense. She was 3-4 with two RBIs and one scored. Ussery was 2-4 with two scored and one driven in and Crumley 2-3 with an RBI and run scored. Carsen Garner, 1-3, drove in two and Homen, 2-3, drove in two and scored twice. Odom was only 1-3 with a walk, but scored three times.
Houston County-Lee County (Oct. 1, 2)
They split during the regular season (swapping 3-2 decisions). They split the first two games of their Region 1-AAAAAA tournament opener. Somebody had to break what was the Houston County-Lee County split.
That “somebody” was the latter. Houston County won the first game, the series played at Lee County. The host blew past the visitor 14-4 in the nightcap. Both of those were played Tuesday.
The Lady Trojans then won the deciding game, 7-6.
Both scored two runs in the first. Lee County plated one in the third but Houston County answered with a pair. The Lady Trojans then pushed four across in the fourth. The Lady Bears responded with two in the bottom half of the inning. They went in order in the fifth, left a runner on first in the sixth and went down via two strikeouts and a line out in the seventh.
Northside-Valdosta (Sept. 30)
On the other side of the Region 1-AAAAAA tournament, Northside blew past its opponent Valdosta. The Lady Eagles won the first one 13-2 in five innings and the second 17-0 in three. Next up will be a doubleheader at Coffee. That matchup is slated for Friday (3:30 p.m./5:30 p.m.).
The Lady Trojans beat the Lady Eagles the two times they faced during the regular season.
