Veterans beats Warner Robins for Region 1-AAAAA title

They weren’t exactly in a partnership – especially when it came down to the championship match – but Veterans and Warner Robins were able to give their competition a one-two punch in the Region 1-AAAAA tournament held Saturday at Warner Robins.

On opposite sides of the floor, the Demonettes faced off against Ware County in their opener while the Lady Warhawks battled Wayne County. Veterans controlled the floor and won in two games, 25-10, 25-11. Warner Robins had a tougher time. It fell behind in the first game, rallied hard, took a lead – 15-13 – but was unable to keep Ware County from rallying, doing the same thing and going on to the win. The second game was much more to Warner Robins’ liking. The Demonettes got out to an 8-0 lead, went on to win it one and then carried that momentum into the next to win it.

That pit the two against each other where Veterans won in three – 21-25, 25-15, 25-8 – to take the title and No. 1 seed into the state tournament. The Demonettes locked in No. 2. Both will host when the first round begins Oct. 20/21.

Katie Reiff helped lead the day for the Lady Warhawks with 18 kills. Madi Towsend had 8. Sophia Lopez put up 25 assists and scored 5 aces. Hannah Gardner also contributed 5.  Sydney Hudson led the defense with 15 digs. Abby Cross complimented hers with 8 of her own.

Also, in the Region 1-AAAAAA tournament, Houston County finished second and Northside fourth. Lee County was the region champ – No. 1 seed – and Valdosta third.
