Veterans girls, boys beat Bainbridge to open division play

Both of Veterans’ squads got off to a good start to begin Region 1-AAAAA competition. The Warhawks/Lady Warhawks hosted Bainbridge and each won. The boys won by just a point – but a point’s a point – 65-64. They led 20-11 after one and 34-27 at the half.

The Bearcats outscored them 19-17 in the third and 18-14 in the fourth but just couldn’t quite overcome the deficit.

Veterans improved to 11-4, 1-0, while Bainbridge fell to 6-9, 1-2.

On the girls’ side, the Lady Warhawks won 54-45. They jumped out to a 17-10 lead after one and were up 32-22 at the half. The Lady Bearcats put up 13 to Veterans’ nine to cut it to 41-35, but the Lady Warhawks outscored them 13-10 down the stretch.

Tamia Luckey scored 15 to lead Veterans. Madison Perez put in 12 – two of those three-pointers and Zykeria Jenkins added 11 – nine of hers on treys. Staci Jones also added 11 rebounds – four on offense and seven on defense.

Veterans improved to 13-2, 1-0 with the win while Bainbridge fell to 9-8, 1-2.
