The Veterans Warhawks made the trip to Leesburg Friday night to face a powerful Lee County team, but the Trojans’ explosive offense proved too much to handle as Veterans fell 48–3 at Trojan Field.
Lee County struck early, putting together a 56-yard, eight-play opening drive capped off by a one-yard touchdown run from Canton Williams to take a 7–0 lead with 8:26 left in the first quarter. The Trojans added to their lead minutes later when Dominique Ball broke free for a 27-yard touchdown run, extending the margin to 14–0 with 4:44 remaining in the first.
Veterans responded late in the quarter with a solid drive of their own, moving 45 yards in nine plays and capping it off with a 20-yard field goal by David Drake, trimming the deficit to 14–3 with 31 seconds left in the first.
Lee County, however, answered quickly. Early in the second quarter, Jordan Bush sprinted 70 yards to the end zone on just the second play of the drive to make it 21–3. The Trojans struck again later in the period when Ball scored his second touchdown of the night on a two-yard run to extend the lead to 28–3 with 4:25 left in the half.
The floodgates opened late in the second quarter. With 1:26 left, quarterback Marcus Snipes found tight end Carter Blackwell for a 38-yard touchdown strike to make it 35–3. Moments later, after forcing a turnover, Snipes kept it himself and raced 62 yards for another score with just 17 seconds left in the half, sending Lee County into the locker room up 42–3.
The Trojans added one final touchdown early in the third quarter when JR Walker ripped off a 45-yard scoring run to make it 48–3. From there, the clock ran continuously, and neither team scored again.
The Warhawks fought hard throughout but couldn’t overcome the Trojans’ speed and depth on both sides of the ball. Veterans will look to regroup next week as they return home for region play.
Next week Veterans will host Coffee at Freedom field.
