The Houston Co Bears hosted county and region rival Northside earlier today and the result was a split with the Lady Eagles walloping the Lady Bears and the Bears taking care of the Eagles. The girls game started out with the host scoring the first two points of the contest before the Blue, White, and Orange took over from there and led 19-4 after one and 39-7 at halftime.
The entire second half was played with six minute quarters and Northside cruised to a 67-9 region victory to improve to 11-3 overall; 2-0 in region play while HoCo falls to 0-13 overall; 0-1 in region play. Jaz Burgess led Northside in scoring with 23 points while the Lady Bears were led in scoring by Sameena Khan with 6 points.
The boys game was closer but the Black, Silver, and White would take control and keep the Eagles at bay. The host led 15-8 after one and would pull away to lead 40-26 at halftime. HoCo got a little sloppy some in the third quarter but would push it’s lead to 57-37 heading into the fourth quarter.
HoCo would lead by as much as 25 but would lay off the gas in the final minutes and the Eagles closed the gap some but it was way too late by that point and the Black, Silver, and White would win 79-63 to open region play. Josh Jackson led the Bears in scoring with 22 points followed by Malik Gillespie with 16 points and Karon Plummer with 13 points. Northside was led in scoring by Kingston Allen with 17 points followed by Mekei Spencer with 12 points.
HoCo improves to 10-5 overall; 1-0 in region play while the Eagles fall to 10-4 overall; 1-1 in region play. Next up for the Bears will be a home region contest against Thomas Co Central on Friday and Northside will travel to take on Lee Co on Tuesday. HoCo’s Malik Gillespie recently surpassed 1,000 career points scored.
