The Veterans Warhawks hosted county and region rival HoCo earlier this afternoon and the result was a split with the Lady Warhawks winning 66-36 and the Bears winning 61-46 behind a fast start. The girls’ game was all Veterans as they jumped out to a 23-7 lead at the end of the first quarter and would lead 34-18 at the half. The host would go on to win 66-36 to sweep the regular season series over the Lady Bears.
Francesca Jones led Veterans in scoring with 13 points followed by Jessi Ortiz with 11 points and Kiersten Rogers with 10 points (all in the first quarter). Alaina Coley led HoCo in scoring with 16 points. The Lady Warhawks improve to 13-7 overall; 5-1 in region play while HoCo fell to 5-15 overall; 0-6 in region play.
The boys’ game would be decided in the first quarter as the Bears jumped all over Veterans to lead 28-5 at the end of the first quarter and the Black, Silver, and White’s first quarter points came from only two players (Kameron Plummer and Malik Gillespie). The visitors would lead 41-20 at halftime and 49-32 after three.
The Warhawks would close the gap down to 14 in the fourth quarter but would not get any closer as HoCo would keep the game from getting close and winning 61-46 to sweep the regular season series over Veterans. Kameron Plummer led the Black, Silver, and White with 22 points (17 in the first quarter) followed by Malik Gillespie with 19 points (11 in the first quarter), and Braylin Mills with 11 points.
Tristan Abner led the Red, White, and Blue in scoring with 10 points. The Bears improve to 18-4 overall; 7-0 in region play after winning their 10th consecutive game and will travel to Leesburg to take on Lee Co in a pivotal region matchup next Tuesday while the Warhawks fall to 12-8 overall; 3-3 in region play and will travel to Douglas to play Coffee next Tuesday.
