The Veterans Warhawks’ football team is prepping for their 15th season which begins in just under two days. Last season, the Red, White, and Blue had a promising start to the season and fell just short in a high-scoring contest against county rival Perry, losing 49-41. The Warhawks began losing quarterbacks to injuries and ultimately went to their fifth string QB and that derailed their season as they would lose to Northgate and go 0-5 in region play.
They got shutout to Thomas Co Central, lost to Lee Co, got stunned by Tift Co at home, and got shutout to county rivals Northside and Houston Co. This season, Veterans will look to avoid the injury bug and try to compete for a playoff spot in what will likely be the toughest region in the state. The Red, White, and Blue have the toughest schedule in the state and it begins in Gray against the Jones Co Greyhounds.
The Warhawks will also be on the road against Statesboro and Starr’s Mill who made the Final Four in AAAA last season. Their first home game will be Week 5 against county rival Perry who is the defending state champ in AAAA followed by a renewal of their rivalry with Warner Robins at the MAC Week 6 as these two will face off for the first time since 2019 and the Demons are the only county rival that Veterans has yet to beat.
The Warhawks’ region schedule will go like this, host county rival Houston Co in the Battle for Freedom Field, play at Thomas Co Central, host Lee Co, play at Coffee, and host county rival Northside. Veterans will play three state champions this season in Perry, Coffee, and TCC.
The road will be tough for the Red, White, and Blue but they will look to try and snag a playoff spot which will likely require at least two wins in region play and we shall see what the season holds for the Warhawks in 2024.
