Bears swept by Pope; season ends at 28-10

The road to the state championship once again ran through a familiar rivalry, as the Houston County Bears and Pope Greyhounds met in the Final Four for the fourth consecutive postseason. In a dramatic two-game series filled with momentum swings, clutch hits, and heartbreaking moments, Pope completed the sweep to advance to the state championship series for the fourth time in five years.

Game one opened with Pope’s powerful lineup immediately setting the tone. The Greyhounds’ top hitters — all Division I college commits — delivered early offense, building a 2-0 lead in the first inning before eventually stretching the advantage to 4-0. Houston County refused to back down, however, and mounted a comeback in the fifth inning. Trailing 4-3, senior Noah Odom delivered the biggest hit of the night for the Bears, ripping a go-ahead two-RBI knock to give Houston County a 5-4 lead.

But Pope answered when it mattered most. After tying the game earlier in the sixth inning, the Greyhounds capitalized on a critical Houston County error that opened the door for three runs in the top of the seventh. The Bears were unable to respond in the bottom half, as Pope secured an 8-5 victory and extended its winning streak to 24 games while taking a commanding 1-0 series lead.

Facing elimination in game two, Houston County turned to senior Ethan Kenney in a pitching duel against Pope left-hander Nick Bobrowski. The Bears struck first with a disciplined two-strike, two-out approach, as Kenney drove in the opening run with an RBI double. Later, Isaiah Galason added another run-scoring single and advanced to second on the throw, pushing Houston County ahead 2-0.
That would be the final hit of the night for the Bears.

From that point forward, Bobrowski settled into dominant form, silencing Houston County’s offense while Pope slowly clawed back. The Greyhounds tied the game in the fourth inning before both starting pitchers traded scoreless frames in a tense defensive battle. Neither team could break through over the next several innings as the matchup appeared destined for extra innings.

Then came the decisive moment.

With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Pope’s Luke Winbush drove a deep fly ball to left field. Houston County’s Tyson Ganas nearly made a spectacular catch at the wall, but the ball fell just out of reach, allowing the winning run to score and sending the Greyhounds into celebration with a dramatic 3-2 walk-off victory.

With the sweep, Pope punched its ticket back to the state championship series and further cemented itself as one of Georgia’s premier programs. For Houston County, the loss marked the end of a strong 28-10 season and their first 10-loss campaign in seven years Despite the disappointing finish, the Bears (who were very young this season) once again proved themselves among the state’s elite, battling one of the nation’s hottest teams to the very end.
