Greyhounds defeat Warhawks; win sixth straight

The Jones Co Greyhounds hosted Central GA foe Veterans earlier this afternoon and the result was an 8-5 Greyhounds’ victory to push their winning streak to six in a row. The visitors got the scoring started in the last of the first when Brandon Mercer hit a two rbi double to drive in Jackson Eaton and Jacob Beach to make the score 2-0 Warhawks going into the last of the first.

In the last of the first, Davis Upshaw, who had eight rbis combined last night, hit a three rbi double to drive in Brayden Lampkin, Colin Evans, and Marlin Mills to give the Purple, Gold, and White a 3-2 lead going into the second inning. In the last of the second, Marlin Mills would hit an rbi double to drive in Colin Evans to make it 4-2 Jones Co.

Later in the frame, the host would plate it’s fifth run when Davis Upshaw hit a groundball and reached on an error which would run in Marlin Mills to give the Hounds a 5-2 lead going into the third inning. In the top of the third, Jacob Beach hit an rbi double to drive in Jackson Eaton to cut the gap down to 5-3 in favor of the Purple, Gold, and White.

In the last of the fourth, Cohen Barfield hit an rbi single to drive in Davis Upshaw to make the score 6-3 Jones Co. In the last of the fifth, Colin Evans hit an rbi single to drive in Brayden Lampkin to make it 7-3 Greyhounds and Evans would score on a passed ball to make the score 8-3 going into the sixth inning.

In the top half of the seventh, Brooks Masters hit a two rbi single to drive in Jacob Beach and Gavin Pike to cut the gap down to 8-5 and they brought the tying run up to the plate but were unable to cut the gap down any further as the Purple, Gold, and White got the last out to preserve the 8-5 victory.

Davis Upshaw for the third consecutive game recorded four rbis which would lead the Greyhounds followed by Colin Evans, Marlin Mills, and Cohen Barfield with one each while Brandon Mercer and Brooks Masters led Veterans in rbis with two a piece followed by Jacob Beach with one.

Jones Co SP Dalton Lowe pitched 6 1/3rd innings and surrendered five earned runs on five hits, walking four, and striking out three in the process while his reliever Cayden Tidwell pitched 2/3rds of one inning in relief and surrendered no runs on no hits, walking none, and striking out one in the process.

The Warhawks’ three pitchers, Gavin Pike, Brooks Masters, and Brandon Mercer combined to allow eight runs (five earned) on eight hits, walking seven, and striking out 10 in the process. The Greyhounds improve to 11-11 overall (.500) and will return to region play next Tuesday at Locust Grove while the Warhawks fall to 12-9 overall and will host Tift Co in a tough region tilt on Tuesday.

The Red, White, and Blue will likely need an upset win over the Blue Devils and some help from Lee Co and TCC if they want to make the playoffs however TCC is playing Northside but the Trojans are playing HoCo which will be tough to get a win against.
