Jones County dominates Hampton

The Jones County Greyhounds bounced back in emphatic fashion Friday night, shutting out the Hampton Hornets 27–0 on the road in their second region game of the season. With the win, Jones County evened its region record at 1–1, while Hampton fell to 1–1.

The Greyhounds set the tone from the opening kickoff. After Hampton failed to field a kick that rolled dead at the Hornets’ 19-yard line, Jones County pounced on the loose ball and converted the miscue into points. Jacob Watts drilled a 33-yard field goal to give the Greyhounds a quick 3–0 lead just two minutes into the game.

The Jones County defense—led by standout linebacker Hunter Hardwick—immediately went to work, forcing a turnover on downs with a punishing fourth-down hit. After a brief exchange of punts, quarterback Cason Taylor sparked a five-play, 61-yard drive, hitting Drew Williams for a 27-yard strike to the 14 yard line of Hampton which later set up a four-yard touchdown run by Bruno Hicks. Watts’ PAT pushed the lead to 10–0 early in the second quarter.

The Greyhounds kept the pressure on defensively. Princeton Whiting made a highlight-reel interception at midfield, but the Hornet defense stiffened to hold Jones County scoreless on that drive. Both teams traded stops late in the half, with the Greyhounds carrying a 10–0 advantage into the break.

Jones County wasted no time extending its lead after halftime. On their first drive of the third quarter, Hicks broke loose off right tackle for a dazzling 45-yard touchdown run, giving the Greyhounds a 17–0 cushion just 68 seconds into the half.

From there, the Greyhounds controlled the game on both sides of the ball. After a series of punts, Jones County mounted a 12-play, 72-yard march, capped by a 31-yard field goal from Watts to make it 20–0 midway through the fourth quarter. A key play on the drive was Taylor’s 32-yard strike to Nate Vaughan, moving the ball deep into Hornet territory.

Junior Holloway delivered the knockout blow minutes later with a 51-yard interception return to the Hampton 25-yard line. Backup quarterback Travis Brock finished the short drive with a five-yard touchdown run, sealing the 27–0 victory with just under three minutes to play.
