Lady Warhawks sweep the Lady Bears, Warhawks splits season series with the Bears; other results

The HoCo Basketball teams hosted county and region rival Veterans earlier today and the result was a Warhawks sweep with the girls winning big 61-22 and the boys winning a tight game 74-71.

The girls game started with the Lady Bears getting a 6-2 lead early but Veterans overcame the gap and took a 17-8 lead going into the second quarter and would lead 44-13 at the half after outscoring the Lady Bears 27-5 in the second quarter to essentially put the game away.

The third quarter saw just a combined 8 pts as Veterans led 49-16 going into the fourth quarter that would be six minutes in length. The visitors finished strong in the fourth to win 61-22 to sweep HoCo in the regular season.

Nariah Nelson led the Lady Warhawks in scoring with 14 pts followed by Jessie Ortiz and Gabby Minus with 12 pts each. The Lady Bears were led in scoring by Alaina Coley with 7 pts.

Veterans improves to 11-5 overall; 3-1 in region play while HoCo falls to 6-8 overall; 1-2 in region play.

The boys game would stay within 10 pts the entire night as both started off relatively well with the Bears leading 14-12 after one. The Warhawks would outscore HoCo 26-18 to take a 38-32 lead at halftime. The Bears would outscore Veterans 25-12 to take a 57-50 lead going into the fourth quarter.

The momentum would swing the other way once again as the host would only make three baskets while the visitors scored 24 pts to HoCo’s 14 with 8 of those pts at the Dozier Law Firm free throw line to to grab a 74-71 lead with 4.2 seconds left. The Bears would make an errant deep throw that would result in a turnover and the Warhawks would win 74-71 to split the regular season with HoCo.

Veterans was led in scoring by Tone Scott with 30 pts followed by Chandler Thomas with 17 pts and Aiden Sweenor with 15 pts while HoCo was led in scoring by Antwan Ziegler with 20 pts followed by Malik Gillespie with 16 pts, Devan Robinson, and Malachi Jackson with 14 pts each.

The Warhawks improve to 11-5 overall; 3-1 in region play while the Bears fall to 9-8 overall; 2-1 in region play. Veterans will travel to play Thomas Co Central on Friday while HoCo travels to Leesburg to play Lee Co next Tuesday.

Elsewhere; Northside & Warner Robins met at the Eagle’s Nest for their first of two matchups this season and the result was a Demons sweep with the girls winning big 81-43 and the boys winning 92-78. The Demonettes improve to 12-2 overall while the Lady Eagles fall to 6-11 overall. The Demons improve to 9-5 overall while the Eagles fall to 5-12 overall. Warner Robins will return to region play at Union Grove next Tuesday while Northside will also return to region play by hosting Lee Co next Friday.
