2024 HoCo Football Season Preview: Bears look to contend in region and possibly in state

The 2024 Houston County Bears football team will look to do two thingsin 2024: compete in what will probably be the toughest region in the state and possibly contend for a state title in AAAAA. The Black, Silver, and White have star QB Antwann Hill Jr. returning for his senior season and will look to do big things for the Bears in 2024 but he will have different receivers to throw to this season as Ricky Johnson, Ricardo Tarver, and Cale Woodburn all graduated this past spring.

Jeremy Edwards is entering his third year as HoCo’s head coach and he is looking to get his team over the hump of beating the South Georgia teams in the region and win a region title which the Black, Silver, and White have not done since 2015. Last season, the Bears looked primed to finally beat Lee Co but had a turnover on downs and lost a fumble in the red zone in the fourth quarter and it gave Lee Co the momentum to score the game’s last 16 pts to win 44-35.

Afterwards, the Bears did not really look the same as they got shutout to Thomas Co Central and beat Tift Co by only 12 pts. HoCo would fall to Woodward Academy in the Sweet Sixteen. The Bears will open the 2024 season at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday August 17th against the Alpharetta Raiders in the Corky Kell Classic which will be at 1pm. Their home opener will be the following Friday against Effingham Co.

HoCo will have back-to-back games against county rivals Perry and Warner Robins and will wrap up non-region play at Tift Co who has a new head coach going into the season. The Black, Silver, and White’s region schedule begins with county rival Veterans followed by county rival Northside and then comes the true test, battling Coffee, Thomas Co Central, and Lee Co which will be the toughest three games on the schedule and the games that will decide the region. Coffee and Lee Co will be road games while TCC will return to Freedom Field for the second consecutive season.

The Bears have potential to do big things in 2024 but only time will tell of what truly happens in the 34th season of Houston County Bears football.
