Greyhounds defeat Warhawks to open 2024

The Jones Co Greyhounds and Veterans Warhawks opened their 2024 seasons against one another and the Greyhounds came out victorious 41-26. The game started with both teams going back and forth in scoring as they would be tied at 13 with 7:10 remaining in the first half. That is when the wheels starting coming off for Veterans as the Purple, Gold, Black, and White responded with a 94 yd kick-off return TD via Javion Solomon to give the host a 20-13 lead after the made extra point.

After a botching a punt and Jones Co recovering deep in Warhawks’ territory, the Warhawks got down double digits when the host scored an 11 yd pass TD to go up 27-13 and after a Veterans interception, the Greyhounds scored seven more pts via a 30 yd pass TD and the made PAT made the score 34-13 Jones with 1:29 remaining in the first half.

The visitors responded with 12 seconds left in the first half with a 20 yd pass TD and the made PAT would make it 34-20 Jones Co which would be the score at halftime. The Purple, Gold, Black, and White would outscore the Red, White, and Blue 7-6 in the second half to secure the 41-26 victory.

Jones Co opens 2024 at 1-0 and will now enter region play quickly as they will host Woodland (Stockbridge) (0-1) next Friday while Veterans is 0-1 and will travel to Bulloch Co to play Statesboro (0-1) next Friday. Also, tonight’s win gave Jones Co head coach Mike Chastain his 47th win as the Greyhounds’ head coach which puts him at first for most wins in program history by a head coach.
