Eagles baseball legend Kal Daniels’ number retired

Kal Daniels, the former Major League Baseball left fielder, has had his jersey number retired at Northside High School in Warner Robins, Georgia, honoring his remarkable athletic legacy that began at the institution decades ago.

Early Career and High School Success

Daniels was a standout player at Northside, where he batted .500, was named an All-Middle Georgia shortstop, and set a single-season home run record that stood for 20 years. His exceptional talent earned him a baseball scholarship to Middle Georgia College, where he was named MVP of the NJCAA National Championship series in 1982.

Major League Career

After being drafted seventh overall by the New York Mets in 1982, Daniels opted not to sign and was subsequently selected by the Cincinnati Reds. He made his MLB debut on April 9, 1986, at age 22, and immediately made an impact as a rookie, batting .320 with six home runs and 15 stolen bases in 78 games. The late great Pete Rose predicted that Daniels would win at least one batting title in his career.

Daniels became known for his rare combination of speed and power during his time with the Reds. In 1987, his second season, he batted .334 with 26 home runs and 26 stolen bases in 108 games, establishing himself as one of the finest young hitters in baseball. His career highlight came in 1990 with the Los Angeles Dodgers, when he batted .296 with 27 home runs and 94 RBIs, finishing 27th in MVP voting.

Over his seven-year professional career with the Reds, Dodgers, and Cubs, Daniels compiled a .285 batting average with 104 home runs and an exceptional .382 on-base percentage. He led the major leagues in on-base percentage in 1988 with a .397 mark and was named National League Player of the Week four times and Player of the Month three times.

Knee injuries cut his career short, with his final game played in September 1992 at age 28. Despite his abbreviated career, Daniels remains a revered figure in Warner Robins, where he has operated Kal Daniels Baseball, helping over 100 young athletes secure baseball and softball scholarships.
