Demons start off strong but cannot hold on in loss to Lee Co

The Warner Robins Demons made the trip to Leesburg earlier tonight to take on the Lee Co Trojans who returned 21 starters from last season’s team and the host overcame a 9-pt halftime deficit to defeat the Demons 26-19. Warner Robins head coach Shane Sams made his debut as the head coach of his alma mater and his team fought their hearts out against a talented and tough Lee Co team on the road.

The game opened with the Cardinal, White, and Black of Warner Robins squib kicking to the Trojans which they fumbled and the visitors recovered the loose ball at the Lee Co 25. Demons kicker Will Shepherd made a 28 yd field goal to give Warner Robins a 3-0 lead with 8:26 to go in the first quarter.

Lee Co blocked a punt to give them possession at the Demon 17 and Devin Collier ran it in from that distance and the PAT made it 7-3 Trojans in the first. Demons QB Chase Reese found Isiah Canion for a 14 yd touchdown pass to make the score 9-7 Warner Robins after the PAT was missed after a fumbled snap with 10:22 to go in the first half.

Chase Reese would find Cam Flowers for a 37 yd touchdown pass and the score was now 16-7 in favor of the visitors after the PAT was made with 5:59 remaining in the second and the score would remain this way heading into halftime.

Lee Co cut into Warner Robins’ lead when Braxton Honer scored a 12 yd rushing touchdown and after the PAT; the score was 16-14 Demons with 3:07 left in the third quarter. Warner Robins had the ball at the Trojan 1 yd line but after a couple of penalties; they had to settle for a 25 yd field goal which was good by Will Shepherd to push the lead to 19-14 with 11:42 remaining in the game.

Lee Co retook the lead with 9:25 to go in the contest when star junior RB Ousmane Kromah ran the rock in from 36 yds out and after the failed 2-pt try; the score was 20-19 in favor of the host. Kromah added a 25 yd rushing touchdown and after another failed 2-pt try, the score was now 26-19 Lee Co with 1:39 to go in the game.

Warner Robins had one last attempt and made some progress but after some penalties, the Demons threw an interception to hand the Trojans the game and they kneeled out the last 8 seconds to win 26-19.

Warner Robins falls to 0-1 on the season and will have the week off next week and will prepare to battle longtime county rival Northside on Friday September 1st. Lee Co opens 2023 1-0 overall and will host Hapeville Charter next Friday.
