For nearly three quarters Friday night, Jones County appeared to be in control. The Greyhounds built a 27–7 lead behind long, methodical drives and a defense that held Ola in check. But the Mustangs stormed back with 21 unanswered points in the second half, stealing a 28–27 victory in a dramatic Region showdown.
Jones County opened strong, marching 80 yards in 15 plays to take a 7–0 lead. A 25-yard field goal stretched the advantage to 10–0, and the Greyhounds extended the margin to 17–0 with a short-field drive midway through the first quarter. After Ola answered with a quick three-play scoring drive, Jones County responded with another 80-yard march capped by a touchdown to take a 20–7 lead into halftime.
The Greyhounds’ dominance up front seemed decisive early. Both the offensive and defensive lines controlled the first half, setting the tone with ball control and defensive pressure. A third-quarter touchdown pushed the lead to 27–7, and Jones County looked poised to close out a comfortable win.
But Ola adjusted. The Mustangs loosened Jones County’s defense with timely passes downfield, then leaned on their bruising running back to gash the Greyhounds for chunks of yardage. Ola cut the lead to 27–14 with a 73-yard drive, then struck again on a 71-yard series to make it 27–21.
The final blow came with just under five minutes to play. Starting from their own 13, Ola pieced together a relentless 87-yard drive, finishing in the end zone to take a 28–27 lead. Jones County was unable to answer, falling short with a desperate drive with seconds to play.
Despite the loss, the Greyhounds showed flashes of dominance and resilience. First-year head coach Justin Montgomery will look to build on those positives as Jones County regroups for the remainder of the season. Next week the Greyhounds travel to Union Grove for another critical region contest.
