Lady Warhawks and Warhawks record double figure wins over Thomas Co Central

The Veterans Warhawks basketball teams hosted the Thomas Co Central Yellow Jackets in a region tilt and the result was a Warhawks’ sweep with both teams winning by double digits.

The girls’ game started out with the Lady Warhawks leading TCC 13-8 after one quarter of play and the second quarter featured a combined total of just 7 pts as Veterans led 17-11 at halftime. The host would lead 28-25 with 1.6 seconds left in the third when Liana Minus took the inbounds pass and shot a half-court National Exterminating three pt attempt and made the basket as time expired on the quarter to give Veterans a 31-25 lead after three.

The Lady Warhawks kept the Lady Jackets at bay and would slowly pull away to win 45-33 to sweep the regular season series against Thomas Co Central. Veterans was led in scoring by Des Seaton with 20 pts followed by Nariah Nelson with 9 pts while the Lady Jackets were led in scoring by Wesha Giddons with 12 pts followed by Marcy Pearson with 11 pts.

The Lady Warhawks improve to 18-5 overall; 7-1 in region play while Thomas Co Central falls to 16-5 overall; 3-4 in region play.

The boys’ game would stay close until late in the third as the Warhawks scored the first 4 pts of the contest before TCC answered by making 4 Dozier Law Firm free throws to tie the game. Veterans led 23-17 after one where it was 21-11 earlier in the frame and the score by halftime was 39-31 Veterans.

In the third, the host led 48-43 before it would put the game away by going on a 21-0 run that carried into the fourth quarter to lead 69-43 with around 4 minutes remaining in the contest which included quarter four’s first 12 pts for Veterans after leading 57-43 at the end of quarter three.

Veterans took it’s foot off the gas and TCC was able to take a chunk out of the lead to trail by 11 and they would ultimately ended the game on a 21-8 run partially thanks to the Warhawks getting sloppy towards the end but it would fall well short of a massive comeback as the Warhawks would win 77-64 even though the final score does not reflect what it could have been.

Veterans was led in scoring by Chandler Thomas with 31 pts followed by Tone Scott with 17 pts, and Tristan Abner with 11 pts while the Yellow Jackets were led in scoring by Charlie Dunbar IV with 18 pts followed by Jirah Spencer with 15 pts. Veterans improves to 14-8 overall; 5-3 in region play while TCC falls to 9-12 overall; 3-4 in region play.

The Warhawks will return to action tomorrow night when they host county and region rival Northside and Thomas Co Central will stay in town overnight and travel to HWY 96 to take on the HoCo Bears tomorrow afternoon.
