Veterans girls, boys; Lady Bears, Lady Panthers roll in first round

The first round of the GHSA state soccer playoffs is complete.

Overall, it was a fairly productive one for the county’s local clubs. Both of Veterans’ Region 1-AAAAA champion teams – 7-0 in region play for the girls and 8-0 for the boys – advanced. The Lady Warhawks beat Tr-Cities 8-0 Tuesday at home. They – improving to 11-5-2 – will host Decatur Monday (April 18) at 7 p.m. Decatur, 10-6-0 and the No. 3 seed out of Region 5, upset Calhoun, the No. 2 out of Region 7, 1-0.

The Warhawks in turn shut out Charles Drew 2-0. That was at home on Wednesday. They will host Cartersville, the No. 2 seed out of Region 7, Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. Cartersville, with a record now of 5-8-0, edged out Cross Keys, the No. 3 out of Region 5, 3-2.

Houston County’s girls, the Region 1-AAAAAA champion at 6-0-0, rolled past Grovetown 10-0. They, improving to 16-1-1, will host Chattahoochee Wednesday (April 20), time: To be determined. Chattahoochee, 13-4-0 and the No. 2 out of Region 7, slipped past Carrollton, the No. 3 out of Region 5, 2-0.

The Bears score was unknown as of this post. They finished the regular season 4-2-0 in 1-AAAAAA, 9-8-0 overall and were the No. 3 seed. That left them to travel and play Lakeside, Evans, the No. 2 out of Region 3.

Also, the perfect 10-0 Region 4-AAAA champion Lady Panthers cruised past Spencer 10-0. Improving to 14-4-0, they will host Madison County Wednesday (April 20) at 6 p.m. Madison County, the No. 3 out of Region 8, edged out Druid Hills, the No. 2 out of Region 6, 1-0.

The Panthers did not fare as well. They were forced to travel to LaGrange where they fell 5-1. They finished the season 15-4-0.

Things did not work out well for neither of Northside’s squads. The Lady Eagles, the No. 4 from Region 1-AAAAAA, fell to host Lakeside, Evans, the No. 1 out of Region 3, 8-0. They finished the year 6-10-0.

The Eagles, also the No. 4, got beat by Grovetown, the No. 1 out of Region 3, 6-1.
