2023 HoCo Football Preview: Bears have high expectations for the upcoming season

For the Houston County Bears Varsity Football team heading into 2023; the ceiling looks to be very high for Coach Jeremy Edwards’ team. The Bears are coming off of a strong 10-3 performance in 2022 that saw the Black and Silver set the program record for most points in a single game with 70 against county rival Veterans and the record for most points in the regular season at 451 along with a new complete season record of 556 points across 13 games.

Coach Edwards, who is entering his second year as the Bears’ head coach; has quickly revamped the offense and has shown how gutsy he can be when he went for two to down county rival Perry 57-56 and then going for two with their season on the line at Brunswick in round one of the Playoffs in overtime that saw an emptied backfield that paid off to give HoCo the 29-28 road win over the Pirates.

All eyes will be on junior quarterback Antwann ‘AJ’ Hill Jr. as he looks to improve on his breakout year a season ago. The star QB at the last update has 27 division one offers. Another thing to look for is the Black and Silver’s defense which was HoCo’s biggest weakness in 2022 as they gave up 49 or more points four times going 1-3 in said games.

If their defense shows improvement, the team could be very dangerous to deal with in 2023 but only time will tell on all of these things. The Bears will open the season at home against Sumter Co on Friday August 18th.

HoCo’s marquee matchups look to be against Perry, Warner Robins, Northside, Lee Co, and Thomas Co Central.
