Bears getting prepped for mammoth region series against Tift Co

The Houston County Bears baseball team is getting prepared for a mammoth region series against the Tift Co Blue Devils who are essentially equal to the Black, Silver, and White talent wise as they have returned almost everybody from last season’s roster.

HoCo has not played their best ball in the last two weeks but especially in the doubleheader against Thomas Co Central six days ago where they split with the Yellowjackets by winning 8-6 and losing 11-3 despite TCC committing six errors in both games. If Tift were to commit several errors, HoCo must take advantage and capitalize on the opportunity.

Last season, the Blue Devils came into this region set with two losses and they fought the Bears tough in at least two of the games. In the first game at the Garden, Tift led by one until HoCo got the lead and then Ryker Chavis blew the game open with a grand slam as the Black, Silver, and White would win 10-4

In Game One of the doubleheader down in NE Tifton, HoCo led 3-0 early but it did not take Tift long to tie the game at 3 where it would stay tied until the Bears plated three more runs in the top half of the seventh to lead 6-3 and they would shut the Blue Devils down to win 6-3 and win the region series. Game Two of the DH featured HoCo keeping Tift behind in the contest and holding off a potential rally in the last of the seventh to win 7-4 to sweep the region set.

This season’s matchup will be bigger than 2023’s and the goal will be winning two of three. To hear what HoCo head coach Matt Hopkins had to say on the recent struggles and what they need to do tomorrow in Tifton, click the video down below.
