Warhawks make huge rally to down Mary Persons; Greyhounds blast ELCA

The Veterans Warhawks hosted the Mary Persons Bulldogs on Senior Night last night and the result was a high-scoring Red, White, and Blue victory 13-12 in eight innings. The Bulldogs led 9-2 after two innings of play and 10-5 after 3 1/2 innings of play. The host would explode in the last of the fourth by plating seven runs to take a 12-10 lead and two MP errors contributed to the offensive onslaught by Veterans.

Mary Persons would tie the game at 12 all in the top of the fifth and that would be the score going into extras. In the top of the eighth with two outs on the board, Bulldogs’ Gavin Mitchell would hit a single and Jackson Redus rounded third and headed for home to try to give the visitors the lead but a great throw by Warhawks’ Joshua Chavous allowed catcher Steven Hafeychuck to corral the ball and make the tag at home just in the nick of time to record the third out and keep the game tied.

In the last of the of the eighth with the bases loaded, Veterans’ JT Turner would be hit-by-pitch for the walk-off to round the bases and score Joshua Chavous to give the host the 13-12 victory on Senior Night. Steven Hafeychuck led the Red, White, and Blue in rbis with four followed by Jackson Eaton, Bryce Dryden, and Brandon Mercer with two a piece.

Cole Car led Mary Persons in rbis with three followed by Nic Arnold, Andrew Snow, and Gavin Mitchell with two a piece. The Warhawks improve to 11-14 overall and will take on Peach Co in Fort Valley this evening while the Bulldogs saw their five-game win streak snapped and sit at 12-14 overall and will host Upson-Lee in a region battle this evening.

The seniors recognized on the Veterans baseball team were #6 Joshua Chavous, #8 Brandon Mercer, #10 Bryce Dryden, #13 Brooks Masters, and #15 Tyler Knight.

Elsewhere, Jones Co hosted ELCA and won 10-0 in six innings to improve to 19-5 overall; 13-4 in region play as they are battling Union Grove for second place in the region and a first round home playoff series. The Greyhounds will rematch ELCA in Henry Co this evening to wrap-up their regular season.
