Bulldogs walk-off Pike Co on a wild pitch

The Mary Persons Bulldogs hosted the Pike Co Pirates in a region tilt earlier this evening and the result was a Bulldogs’ 3-2 victory in nine innings. The Black, Gold, and White got on the board in the last of the first when Cole Carr hit a sac bunt that would drive in Tristan Hunt to make the score 1-0 MP and that would be the score through 4 1/2 innings of play.

In the last of the fifth, the host got an insurance run when Brady Christman hit a solo jack to left to make the score 2-0 Bulldogs which would be the score going into the seventh inning. The Pirates would not go down without a fight as they would hit back-to-back rbi singles to tie the game at 2 going into the last of the seventh where Mary Persons would fail to get the walk-off run and the game would go into extra innings.

Earlier in the game, the host had the bases loaded in the last of the third with nobody on but an infield grounder to the third baseman would result in a runner being thrown out at home and then the next runner at third would get thrown out at home in a steal attempt and then the groundout would occur to end the inning with no runs being plated.

In the last of the eighth, the Bulldogs caught another tough break as the batter would be struck out and then the runner attempting to steal second would be thrown out in the process to end the inning. Nevertheless, in the last of the ninth, a single would occur followed by a double to have a runners at second and third with Gavin Barr at the plate, during his at-bat, the Pike Co pitcher would throw a wild pitch and Caden Taylor would score the walk-off run to give MP the 3-2 region home win.

This win would be the Bulldogs’ first ever home win over the Pirates. Mary Persons’ SP Cole Carr was electrifying as he pitched six innings surrendering no runs on one hit, walking two, and striking out 11 in the process but did not get the win as his reliever Ian Lewis surrendered two earned runs that would ultimately send the game to extras. Zack Grizzard pitched in extras and surrendered no runs in the process and he got credited with the win tonight.

Brady Christman and Cole Carr had both of the Black, Gold, and White’s rbis tonight. Pike Co’s pitchers combined to surrender three runs (two earned) on six hits, walking four, and striking out eight in the process. Mary Persons improves to 11-8 overall; 4-0 in region play while the Pirates fall to 3-15 overall; 2-2 in region play and these two will play in a region doubleheader in Zebulon on Friday.
