Demons’ Coach Sams wants to build trust between players & coaches

The Warner Robins Demons are starting a new era in 2023 as Shane Sams takes over as head coach of the Demons football team. Coach Sams; a 2008 graduate of Warner Robins High School; played for legendary head coach Bryan Way from 2004-2007 that included a state championship in 2004 where he was the quarterback.

Coach Sams started his coaching career at Villa Rica at the age of 19 & then he became the offensive coordinator at New Manchester. Sams would go on to coach at Chapel Hill & then became the offensive coordinator at Warner Robins from 2016-2018 under head coach Mike Chastain. He would be come the head coach at Centennial High School in 2019. “We started 14 freshmen & we had to figure out how to just compete in a AAAAAA ballgame with 25 24 kids 14 freshmen are starting how do we compete, how do we do things & it really made us work… it taught a lot about football in those aspects of it.” Sams said in an interview with Sportsmic team member Todd Bailey about his first head coaching stint at Centennial.

Coach Sams returned to Houston County where he became the offensive coordinator at Northside in 2020. He would later become the offensive coordinator at Rome from 2021-2022 before becoming the head coach of the Warner Robins Demons.

When asked about what it takes to run a successful football program, Sams replied “I think the biggest aspect that I’ve always talked to with these coaches & these players is trust, there’s got to be a level of trust between the coaches between each other & between the players & the coaches especially in today’s world in a social media aspect of all that, you know when I say trust, that you know everybody is up front with each other, how we’re gonna operate, how we’re gonna do this, how I expect things to be done, sometimes that trust leads to tough conversations that sometimes…. people avoid them because they’re uncomfortable; they’re uncomfortable with those conversations & that becomes coach-to-coach & that becomes player-to-coach you know in those aspects of it & I think that trust builds relationships; something builds that bond that can’t be broken & when you have those things on the field & together; you become a really good football team.”
